What are your main responsibilities in this role?
I work in schools and with people in our community to deliver occupational therapy sessions.
How did you start out in your apprenticeship role?
I spoke to my manager and discussed how I wanted to continue working on my professional development and become a fully qualified Occupational Therapist . I was then put in touch with our apprenticeship lead who helped me with the process.
What entry-level jobs should someone pursue if they are looking to follow a similar career trajectory?
Starting as an assistant was great as I got to experience firsthand what an occupational therapist does. It helped me develop the knowledge and skills needed for the role and confirmed that this is the career I want to pursue.
What skills are most important in your job?
We need to be organised, flexible and approachable. We work with several different children with different conditions and abilities, so every case is different.
What are the biggest challenges you face in your role?
The course I am currently completing takes four years. Trying to get a good work life balance has been tricky however, with support from my manager and my team, I feel like I have now achieved a good balance.
What are the biggest rewards in your role?
For me, the biggest reward is seeing the children I work with reach their goals. Knowing I have been the one to help them achieve that gives me great satisfaction.
Top tips for others thinking about beginning an apprenticeship?
Do it, you won’t regret it! Learning first hand has been an amazing experience.
Your next step on your career pathway?
When fully qualified, I will continue to carry on working with my team. I enjoy working in in this department.
